After going to Istanbul to study law, Sönmez was expelled from the university because he worked for the pro-democracy movement. Eventually, he was permitted to take the exam and was able to work as a lawyer, while also working for a human rights organisation. In time, he also became an award-winning and respected poet and novelist in his home country. However, after severe mistreatment by the Turkish police, he was helped to go to the UK where he now lives in exile.
Burhan Sönmez from Turkey talks about what the limitations of realism are and how he has chosen to relate to it. The conversation will be led by the American poet and critic John Freeman.
