Writing the dead alive

Maylis de Kerangal has written a masterful and poetic book where grief, the human body and utility are central themes. In Mend the Living, a young man dies in a car accident, forcing those closest to him to decide how his body can still be beneficial to others. The book not only describes what happens to the body, but also questions how the world looks at a body that is no longer "active". The author is in conversation with John Freeman.
