In 2027, the Norwegian Festival of Literature turns its focus to North America, the United States, and what is often described as “Trump’s backyard.” The world has changed dramatically in recent years, and many of those changes can be traced back to the White House. How are these developments shaping literature in North America and here in Norway? Can literature carry on as before? Should it? Is literature itself under pressure, and if so, where does its resilience lie? Put simply: what is literature’s role now?
From 24 to 30 May, Lillehammer will welcome writers from across North America and beyond, bringing together authors, thinkers, and literary communities for a week of conversations, ideas, and celebration.
New Head of Programme
This autumn, Christian Kjelstrup joined the festival as Head of Programme and has already begun work on shaping the 2027 programme.
‘The world feels pretty bleak right now,’ says Kjelstrup. ‘At the same time, it’s important to celebrate the creativity, joy, and sense of community that great literature inspires. A festival is also about coming together, sharing experiences, and having a good time. That’s exactly what we’ll be doing in Lillehammer.’
