Sofi Oksanen has been awarded the Bjørnson Prize for “her groundbreaking literary work and passionate dedication to freedom of expression and human rights.”
At the heart of Oksanen’s writing is a bold and uncompromising humanism. Her work often explores Estonia’s turbulent 20th-century history—from the interwar period of independence, through the Soviet era, and into the years following the fall of the Iron Curtain.
Oksanen was among the first to warn of Putin’s ambitions, though she initially felt her concerns weren’t taken seriously. After the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the ongoing war in Ukraine, there is no longer anyone who doubts her insights. Join her in conversation with Russia expert Stefan Ingvarsson.
