Joik is often considered the oldest surviving musical form in Europe, encompassing rhythm, words, movements, and sound-shaping. The joik is one of the strongest cultural expressions among the Sámi, serving as a way to sing and tell stories about people, animals, nature, and events. However, there is a difference between joiking and singing. In singing, words and poetry are central, whereas the joik incorporates a larger portion of non-verbal elements. Throughout the centuries, joik has functioned not only as a way to preserve and convey culture and history but also as a powerful means of expression for identity and resistance.
