Throughout her life, Tove Jansson was a masterful portrayer of people. She had the ability to capture complex emotions in just a few simple words or a seemingly simple story, and had the ability to create characters that feel strangely familiar to all of us. Her insightful, and sometimes slightly melancholic, stories encourage us to accept others as they are, to look past their peculiarities, and instead see and appreciate their positive qualities. Tove Jansson's stories have meant a great deal to many, including to fellow writers.
