WRITING FAN-FICTION FOR THE ART WORLD

In this lecture, The White Pube reflects on how their own frustration with traditional art criticism led them to become critics with their own website in 2015. After years of publishing weekly reviews of art, games, books, films, and YouTubers, the duo realized that they had also gotten tired of their own writings. They expected more from art criticism and from themselves as writers. This led to a book deal with Penguin Random House imprint Particular Press in 2022 and to the release of their debut novel in October 2024. The lecture is about how the process of writing a book led to the development of new, satisfying, surreal, and anarchic ways of writing about art through the wonderful format of fan fiction – and how the work has given them renewed energy to continue with weekly reviews.
