A Sudanese author, editor, multimedia journalist, video editor and translator.
Elzahra is currently focusing on her writing career as an ICORN resident in Norway. Her latest held position was the Deputy English Editor of Ayin Network (3ayin), which she joined in 2020 as a multimedia journalist.
Her work mainly involves writing in-depth reports, editing, translation, video editing, data visualisation and proofreading; to produce original and engaging stories and video content for an international audience.
Elzahraa started her career in 2014 when she joined Sudan Vision Daily newspaper as a journalist and a writer where she helped in establishing a weekly cultural section that features interviews with artists and musicians, provided coverage for some of the cultural events in Khartoum city among other topics. In 2015. Elzahraa joined the editorial board of a women magazine named Alsamraa where she focused on highlighting success stories of women from different walks of life, beside writing monthly artistic book reviews.
She has been reporting environmental and water related issue since 2016, through specialized regional and international platforms, such as MiCT’s The Niles, and working on in-depth reports and multimedia investigations for regional platforms such as Infonile. As a water reporter, she is a member of many specialized journalistic networks related to institutions such as IHE delf, SIWI, NBI, DIRAJ and Climate Tracker. She is also a UN RAF fellow.
As an environmentalist, she aims to work towards achieving the SDGs through her job and other activities such as being a UNLEASH alumni focusing on SDG 6 which is related to the core of her work. As a women rights advocate, she regularly reports on issues related to women and children, the problematic Sudanese legal system and the need for democracy and freedom in the country. Other themes she regularly covers are political issues, economy, and education.
Elzahraa is one of the co-authors of a handbook for journalists and writers interested in pursuing a career in water reporting named “Water Conflicts and Cooperation: A Media Handbook”.
Throughout her career, she briefly worked as a producer\\presenter on an independent livestreaming project, an editing translator for a local media outlet, and published several short stories in print publications and websites.
Elzahraa always aspires to give a voice to the less privileged and goes to a great length to report stories of people from remote places, neglected by the local media and government, and suppressed by the authorities, with hope of helping them to find solutions.
She values accurate story telling through research and fact checking, and leverages multimedia tools and data visualization in reaching a broader audience.
